Sky to Sea Healthy Waters

Initiated in 2023, Healthy Waters is a joint venture between Whistler Lakes Conservation Foundation and Raincoast Conservation Foundation that expands WLCF’s volunteer monitoring from the lakes into the watersheds. The program tests for contaminants in waters in the Whistler area that drain into both the Fraser and Coastal watersheds. The 2.5-year program will help to identify potential threats which may then be acted upon or further investigated over time.

We are measuring in two watersheds: Green River which drains northeast via the Lillooet and Fraser Rivers into the Strait of Georgia (watershed area of 875 km2) and the Cheakamus River which drains south via the Squamish River to Howe Sound (watershed area of 1,034 km2). Combined, these watersheds cover an area of 1,909 km2.

WLCF values our partnership with Raincoast Conservation Foundation and applauds Dr. Peter Ross’s vision for the Healthy Waters Program. Pairing WLCF’s local knowledge and boots-on-the ground commitment with Raincoast’s technical and science expertise makes for a dynamo team capable of making a positive difference in watershed health and the well-being of salmon, whales and people.
