Volunteer Lake Monitoring

In 2021 WLCA established the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) in five Whistler lakes (Alpha, Nita, Alta, Green and Lost Lakes). The monitoring season runs from mid-April to October and crews measure water clarity, temperature (T) and dissolved oxygen (DO) in all five lakes plus chlorophyll A and phosphorous in Alta Lake.  Limnologists and lake scientists continue to reinforce the value of DO/T profiles in lakes, especially in a warming climate.

By 2023 WLCF met its goal to acquire 5 YSI ProSolo instruments for each lake that measure the DO/T profiles.  One instrument for each lake ensures efficient field operations for volunteers. Thanks to cost-sharing grants from  Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Enviro Fund and RMOW Community Enrichment Program.

The data collected from the lake monitoring program is shared with partners, uploaded to the provincial data base every year and reported on every 3 years. This helps lake residents and users, our community, governments and others understand the health of our lakes and inform future monitoring, stewardship activities and management actions.

Our Partners

WLCF extends thanks to our partners, notably the BC Lake Stewardship Society (BCLSS) and the BC Ministry of Environment & Climate Change (ENV), for providing training, technical support, data analysis and management, and report writing support.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW)’s equipment and field operations support is also appreciated.

In joining BCLSS and becoming part of B.C.’s lake stewardship community, our members have access to a broad range of resources and opportunity to learn from other stewardship groups around the province.

We are Proud of our Successes!
